"Bilingual education is not an invention of the 1960s.
Contrary to popular misconception, earlier waves of immigrants often enrolled their children in bilingual or non-English-language
schools -- public and private." National Assocaition of Bilingual Education
With an ongoing increase
in the number of ESL(English as a Second Language) students entering our schools, it is important to evaluate the importance
of having a strong and encouraging bilingual education program within. The program has grown over the years but continues
to be a necessary program in the public school system.
Our
site will evaluate the growth and history of the bilingual education program; including where it began and where
it stands today. Beginning with Ben Franklin, the interest in the growing demand of such a program was initiated
due to the rising number of German immigrants. The languages varied far beyond German soon after.
Also, we will demonstrate some of the key players in funding this program as well as give you an overview of the numbers taken
into consideration. We'll look over how this funding is then distributed to attempt to equally provide. Beyond the funding,
there is a need for proper instruction. This site also explores briefly what is needed for certification to instruct an ESL
classroom.
We will consider the philosophy behind this vital program. Looking into the purpose and overall goals of this program will
demonstrate how beneficial the assistance can be.
